We have so much to celebrate this week in the Highland family! From new employees, to acts of kindness, to smiling children dressed up for Halloween, to a joint commission accreditation in Clarksburg, we have so much to be thankful for in our Highland family. So, let me just highlight a few of these, because we need to take time out to celebrate every once in a while.
Today, I attended my second monthly new employee orientation. We welcomed 15 new employees to orientation, from BHTs, to nurses, to therapists, and admissions staff. It was my privilege to meet them today and to talk to them about their role in helping us meet our mission, and to live our values every day. My hope is that each of our new employees grows and develops here at Highland, and that each of them knows what an important part of our Highland family they are. Help me to welcome our new employees to our Highland family and celebrate their choice to work with us to provide the highest quality care to our patients and their families.
This week was Halloween, and Highland celebrated in style! I saw staff members dressed in costume, and children who were beaming behind skeleton, princess, and vampire masks. You could feel the energy in the air as the children moved across all of our hospital departments and collected treats. I heard one young boy say his bag was getting quite heavy and indeed, it looked pretty full of candy and treats. Staff went out of their way to provide treats for our patients, preparing goodie bags, purchasing coloring books, and other goodies from their own pocket to provide a happy Halloween for our patients. A special thanks to our Security guard Steve who purchased anti-bullying bears for our children. The acts of kindness shown to our patients each day were certainly shining yesterday! It’s great to take time out to celebrate with our staff and children and to become more connected to one another as our Highland family.
From a business perspective, we also have to celebrate with our Highland Clarksburg Hospital family, as this week they were notified of full accreditation by The Joint Commission. While we had no doubt that Jim Dissen, President and CEO of Highland Clarksburg Hospital, Eric Kennedy, Chief Operating Officer, Mike Casdorph, Director of Facilities, and their staff were prepared to provide the highest quality care in a newly renovated state of the art facility, it’s nice to have that affirmation from our accreditors. So, join me in congratulating them and celebrating their accomplishments.
While our celebrations were plentiful this week, we also had to come together as a Highland family to mourn the tragic loss of one of our Highland employees, Candy Lachea Poling. Candy’s mom shared with me yesterday how much Candy loved Highland, and I know that everyone who knew Candy loved working with her here. As a Highland family, we’ll continue to come together to honor Candy’s memory, and hope that we’ll all take time to celebrate her life and her legacy with each other as we mourn her loss.
So, as we move into the weekend, I hope you will celebrate all that we have to be thankful for with your own family, and with your Highland family. I know I will.
