Cynthia Persily, PhD, RN, FAAN
Dr. Persily is the CEO of Highland Hospital in Charleston, WV
Today was a day to celebrate. Our founder, Dr. William B. Rossman turned 100 years old earlier this month on November 4th, and today, we were honored to welcome him back to Highland Hospital to celebrate this momentous milestone in his life. But, more importantly, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank him for his vision some 60 years ago that brought Highland Hospital to life.
We were joined today for cake and fellowship by about 20 friends and co-workers of Dr. Rossman who talked a lot about the “good old days” at Highland. What a joy to see a group who really are responsible for laying the foundation for excellence in psychiatric care in Charleston come together to talk about their experiences.
When I was asked to make a few remarks, I wanted to be sure Dr. Rossman knew how grateful we are to him, and in fact, how grateful the entire community is. We are all standing on his shoulders, and on the shoulders of all who gathered today as we endeavor to provide the highest quality behavioral health care to everyone in need. As others reminisced with Dr. Rossman, they pointed out how he had influenced their lives, including what they learned from him, what an excellent mentor he was to them, and how he influenced their career choices through his enthusiasm for the profession and for caring for people. Dr. Rossman was even presented with a poem that traced his career and adventures–what a wonderful tribute to a fabulous man!
The celebration is not ending today though. We will continue to celebrate Dr. Rossman, and his contributions to Highland as we kick off our 60th anniversary year on November 22, 2014 at the Embassy Suites with our Glitz, Glamour and Ice Gala. Tickets are going fast, but it’s not too late–we hope you will join us to celebrate the wonderful accomplishments of Highland Hospital, and to honor our founder. Take the time to meet old friends, make some new ones, browse our silent auction, and get yourself or a loved one some “glitz and glamour”. We promise you won’t be disappointed as you support Highland Hospital in our important work—and help us succeed for our next 60 years!
