Cynthia Persily, PhD, RN, FAAN
Dr. Persily is the CEO of Highland Hospital in Charleston, WV
I feel the energy in the air at our Highland Charleston companies. We are moving forward in a very positive way, and making some long overdue improvements and enhancements to our facilities, and additions to our staff. We are also empowering more and more of our employees to use their skills to the full advantage of our patients and our organizations. And, more will come.
While I won’t bore you with the details, we are now moving forward on a number of projects that have gotten pushed aside during our transition in leadership—first my own transition into this role some 20 months ago, and now transition with my new leadership team who are eager to make their impact on the organization. While we’ve been making progress on our projects, we’ve also realigned some of the people in our organization to better reflect our current size and need for agility. I’d like to highlight a few of these key leadership positions.
I’ve appointed Mr. Rick Rucker as Interim Chief Operating Officer. In this role, Rick is overseeing our facilities, as well as our information technology and health information systems departments. He’s also overseeing business development for our companies, in addition to other areas. With his background in revenue cycle, he not only has his eye on the systems, but also on how we are being paid within those systems. One of the important organizational changes that Rick has been able to accomplish, with my full support, is splitting our information technology and health information systems departments. Pearl McWatters will continue to work diligently on our continued implementation of the electronic medical record as Director of Health Information Systems. Damon Carradine will expand his current role as Network Manager to head the Information Technology department. We know this will serve us well in our future.
In addition, I’ve appointed Mr. Chris Miller to Interim Chief Financial Officer. Chris previously held the role of Controller in our companies. He brings with him his rich knowledge of all things financial, and a rich history within our companies. Chris has already made an impact as he re-evaluates our organizational needs in the financial management department, and has begun to identify how we use our people to the top of their skills level. He is also looking closely at how we attribute our costs to different companies, as well as how we can decrease those costs without any change in quality We have many projects in process to improve our financial situation across our companies, and with Chris’s leadership and the work ethic of the members of his departments, I know we will accomplish our goals.
These new (but familiar) leaders join our well established and dedicated organizational leaders in helping our organization move forward. I will share more with you as we progress with our organizational changes, but from where I sit, I will say that we have a bright future in hand!
