We interviewed Amanda Ream, Executive Director, SC Chamber of Commerce and Kari Davis, Chair of the SC Chamber Board of Directors.
Amanda talked about the mission of the South Charleston Chamber of Commerce. It is a benefit for our Kanawha Valley. They are a network of individuals, businesses, and government working together to promote and enhance businesses in the greater South Charleston area and throughout West Virginia.
The Chamber strives to seek out and welcome new businesses into the area and works to create business opportunities for local merchants by sponsoring major annual events. They work aggressively and cooperatively with city officials to create an atmosphere conducive to business by addressing the needs of both retailers and customers.
The Chamber also sponsors several annual events. These include the Groundhog Breakfast and Economic Forecast, Administrative Professionals Luncheon, and Business Expo. Business After Hours events are held regularly to provide informal networking for individuals and businesses. Also, informational seminars and workshops are held periodically and at discounts to members.
Amanda reminded us the the 2nd Annual Wellness 5K Walk/Run scheduled for April 9, 2016 beginning at 8:00 a.m. at Oakes Field.
The Chamber also has an Educational Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, which provides support for educational opportunities in the local area. The Chamber hosts annual fundraisers, such as the Golf Tournament and Boo Bash, to support the Educational Foundation.
Kari discussed her role as Board President. The board meets monthly to determine a course of action for issues of concern. There are also several different committees on which any member of the Chamber may serve; these committees include Events, Marketing & Member Services, Information & Training, and Public Policy, among others.
Kari was excited to discuss the Candidate Forum being organized by the Chamber this year. On April 14th & 21st, the chamber is sponsoring a Meet & Greet for local candidates.

Pam has been in that role for 1 year, but we learned that she has played as a member of our WV Symphony for 9 seasons.
Pam discussed all the exciting things happening at the WVSO and how particularly wonderful their education and youth symphony program is.
The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra is West Virginia’s premier performing arts organization, presenting classical, pops, and chamber-music concerts annually throughout the Mountain State. Currently in its 76th season, the WVSO is a proud member of the community and enriches the region by providing affordable, high-quality concerts, collaborations with West Virginia arts organizations and a nationally award-winning education program.
Pam talked about the annual WV Symphony Raffle event scheduled for March 23, 2016 at the Charleston Marriott. The West Virginia Symphony League is once again organizing the Raffle event. The committee lead by Barb Wessels and Erin Brewster, have done their usual wonderful job in supporting the WVSO.
As in the past, tickets are $100 with the Grand Winner receiving a $10,000 cash prize. Other prizes available along with food and drink. This year’s event will also feature a Game Show theme complete with contestants from the audience playing for prizes. It promises to be entertaining.
