Cynthia Persily, PhD, RN, FAAN
Dr. Persily is the CEO of Highland Hospital in Charleston, WV
Thirty five years ago today, I graduated from college and began in my chosen profession of nursing. What a wild ride it’s been! From working as a staff nurse in a large University hospital in Philadelphia, to serving as a women’s health nurse practitioner in a small rural clinic in West Virginia, to now charged with leading the Highland companies in Charleston, there never has been a dull moment, nor a time when I said “I’ve had enough, I can’t do it anymore”. I’ve loved every job in health care that I’ve ever had the privilege of having. I get so much out of being able to see people taken care of well.
Today, as I greeted each of our employees during our National Hospitals Week celebration, I heard so many times “I love working here”. I also heard peers supporting each other, hugging a colleague who was down, and congratulating a peer on their graduation. How lucky are we to have so many dedicated employees who treat each other as family, and even more important, how lucky are our patients to have our staff to provide the care that they need so desperately? We are so blessed to be able to provide services every day to those in need. And while we say thank you every year at this time, and provide ice cream and a token of our appreciation, we should be shouting our praise from the rooftops every day about our employees. We have good people who are doing good work under difficult situations every day.
So, to each and every one of our employees–thank you for what you do—the walls of our organizations would be weakened without your presence. You truly are our most precious resources. Thanks for being AWESOME!
