Highland Highlights is a 30 minute weekly TV show featuring organizations, events, grass-roots efforts and people who move our state and community forward in a positive way.
The show is a collaboration with Highland Hospital, Kanawha County Schools and Suddenlink Communications.
The show airs daily at 8:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Suddenlink’s channel 17.
We interviewed Bill McDonald of the Kiwanis Club of West Charleston along with Katie Murray, Children’s Services Coordinator of Kanawha County Public Library.
Bill talked about the mission of the Kiwanis Club which is to serve the Children of the Kanawha Valley and the World. The West Charleston Kiwanis club supports many local and global causes They provide scholarships to help students going to college or post high school education. They sponsor Key Clubs in two high schools in the valley, Capital High and George Washington. These Key Clubs themselves have provided many service projects though out the valley. They provide new clothing at Christmas for elementary school kids from six elementary schools.
In order to provide these services and offer these programs, the club has numerous fundraisers throughout the year. Their 2nd Annual Corporate Regatta is scheduled for June 20, 2016 from 11:30-1:00 p.m. in front of the Kanawha County Public Library.
The Kiwanis Corporate Regatta is an exciting miniature “yacht” race that raises much needed funds for the Kanawha County Public Library and other Kiwanis charities.
The 20 competitors used supersoaker water guns to power their model yachts across the Kanawha Public Library’s Fountain. The winning yacht receives a check for $1000 payable to the charity of the skipper’s choice. The most artisitic yacht wins a check for $500, payable to the captain’s select charity. Last year the Kiwanis Club donated $3500.00 to the Library Foundation for summer reading programs. Click here to sponsor/register your company yacht today.
Katie Murray talked about the various programs the library can operate with the donated monies. From read-a-thons to read alouds, the library helps hundreds of kids every summer with their programs. For more information about the Kanawha County Public Library, call 304-343-4646.
