Celebrating women in our community
Each year, YWCA Charleston honors four Kanawha Valley women for their outstanding personal and professional achievements, as well as their contributions to the community at the annual Women of Achievement luncheon in March. Along with these women, a woman who has overcome obstacles and life challenges through participating in one or more of the YWCA’s programs is selected as the Empowerment Award winner.
This year, Highland Hospital’s very own President and CEO, Dr. Cynthia Persily has been recognized as one of these truly remarkable women. Cyndi has long served the Highland family and community as a board member and then stepped into her role as President and CEO of the Highland Companies in September 2013. Since that time she has overseen a restructuring of the organization, brought Highland into the era of web based communication and social media, and guided us through the addition of new programs to better serve those with behavioral health and substance abuse issues. All the while, not only has she been our leader but our cheerleader, encouraging each of us to provide the highest quality care to the children, adolescents and adults we serve. To quote Edith Wharton, “There are two ways of spreading light…to be the candle, or the mirror that reflects it.” Thank you Cyndi, from your staff and employees, for being our light!
As a fundraiser, Women of Achievement supports the YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. The YWCA programs supported are: Sojourner’s Shelter for Homeless Women and Families; Resolve Family Abuse Program; Mel Wolf Child Development Center; Alicia McCormick Homes; Shanklin Center for Senior Enrichment; and Empowerment Homes for Women.
